ATO & Treasury: Australia's E-invoicing Framework

Australia adopted the Peppol e-invoicing framework in 2019 through a joint Australia-New Zealand Government Electronic Invoicing Arrangement. The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) serves as the Australian Peppol Authority, promoting adoption across government and business sectors while maintaining compliance with GST requirements.

While B2B e-invoicing remains voluntary, all Commonwealth agencies have been required to receive e-invoices since July 2022, with many state governments also adopting the framework for enhanced efficiency and transparency.

Official Implementation Timeline

July 1, 2022 - Government Mandate (Active)

All Commonwealth agencies required to receive e-invoices via Peppol network, aiming for 80% of invoices to be received electronically.

May 15, 2025 - PINT A-NZ Mandatory (Active)

PINT A-NZ format becomes mandatory for all B2G and B2B e-invoices. Peppol BIS 3.0 format deprecated in favor of the Australia-New Zealand joint specification.

Business E-Invoicing Right (BER) - Pending

Proposed initiative to allow businesses to require trading partners to use Peppol e-invoicing. Currently under government consideration but not yet formally approved.

  • Format: PINT A-NZ (mandatory since May 15, 2025)
  • Archival: 5 years minimum retention requirement
